Cross-Cultural and Global Competency

When you have Cross-Cultural Competence you can:

  • Demonstrate attitudes of respect, openness, curiosity and discovery towards a culture different from your own.
    • Exhibit a willingness to pursue cross-cultural learning.
  • Identify and interpret cultural differences.
    • Describe the interrelatedness of and the diversity within the full range of human groupings and cultural perspectives.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of how contemporary cultural and global context is characterized by a diversity of cultures and experiences.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately in crosscultural situations.
    • Ability to adjust behavior and/or language, based on cross-cultural situations.
  • Recognize that your own worldview is not universal.
    • Apply self-understanding of how your cultural history shapes your interactions with those of other cultures.

When you have Global Competence you can, in addition to the skills of cross-cultural competence:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of world geography, impending changes in the global climate, social and economic conditions, political and religious differences, and events affecting the rest of the world.
  • Interpret the complexity and interdependency of world issues, events and historical forces that have shaped the current world system.
  • Demonstrate written and spoken proficiency in a second language.
  • Collaborate effectively with people from cultures different from your own.
    • Ability to complete a project over a sustained period of time, demonstrating effective working relationships.
