What would I be studying?

students in classroomStudents will conduct on-site research and engage in classroom discussions of issues related to metropolitan problems in European and/or developing nations.  They will benefit from program that emphasizes an international, comparative perspective on the dynamics of urbanization. Classes are offered in English in the Metropolitan Studies Program

How can I study at the University of Amsterdam as an Exchange Student?

Students enroll and pay Florida State University tuition and fees, and tuition and fees are waived at the host university. All participants must be currently enrolled and degree-seeking students in good standing with all academic credit earned at the host institution being credited to The Florida State University. A student participating in the exchange must be in attendance at The Florida State University for one semester prior to the exchange.

To participate in this exchange you must be a graduate student in Urban and Regional Planning or a student pursuing the Department’s pre-graduate program.

  1. Contact The Florida State University Department of Urban and Regional Planning Academic Advisor for the International Exchange, Dr. Tim Chapin, who will direct you through the department's selection process for outgoing reciprocal exchange students at The Florida State University.
  2. Complete the Application for outgoing reciprocal exchange student at The Florida State University, including authorizing signatures.
  3. There will be an application form for the University of Amsterdam as well. Once your application has been evaluated by University of Amsterdam you will receive an acceptance letter.

Please contact the International Center for specific deadlines. The University of Amsterdam recommends starting the process a year in advance.

Academic Calendar

The Fall semester is early September to mid December. The Spring semester is early February to late June. Current academic calendar.

How do I secure a student visa?

Students who are citizens of the United States do not need a visa to enter the Netherlands. When you apply for your residence permit, you hand in your application and pay the fee. Instructions on how to pay the legal fee.

Accommodations- Where would I live? What is the cost of Living?

studentsLike most Dutch universities, the University of Amsterdam does not have a campus, and demand for student housing is high. To assist international students in finding appropriate accommodation, the university has signed agreements with various housing corporations. These corporations offer furnished accommodation to students. Sheets and blankets are available at cost price. The rent for these rooms varies according to type, size and location. In total the UvA has 1,000 rooms to allot to international students. The university residence halls are located in Amsterdam. Some are situated in the center of Amsterdam, while others are around 20 minutes from the center by public transport.

Cost of Living in Amsterdam

During your stay in Amsterdam you can expect to spend between $1,200 and $1,800 per month on living expenses. This includes rent but does not include tuition fees. The following is a rough estimate of student living costs:

The costs above are calculated for the average person and subject to change according to variations in exchange rates. All students must have sufficient funds to cover their daily expenses during the period they are on the exchange program.
