Global Pathways Certificate:
International/Intercultural Experience Options

This sustained experience will make it possible for you to:

  • Adjust your behavior and/or language in intercultural situations.
  • Collaborate effectively with people from cultures different from your own.

This experience should reflect your theme area. Experiences which occurred after you enrolled as a degree-seeking university student and within two years of application can be used to meet this requirement if they are the one of the options listed below.

Additional experiences may also be eligible, but do need to be approved in advance of participation.

International Experiences

EWBUniversity approved or national recognized organization's international experiences (such as study abroad, cultural exchange, international internship, service learning or research project abroad) for at least 1 week include:

Additional experiences may also be eligible, but do need to be approved in advance of participation by the Program Director, Global Pathways Certificate and Exchanges.

Criteria for International Experiences:

Immersion in the target culture, as characterized by

  • If less than one month, but at least a week:
    • Strategic daily interaction with the host culture that includes all of the following: social, cultural, educational and service activities.
    • Minimal opportunities to ‘retreat’ to your own cultural group
  • If more than one month:
    • Strategic daily interactions with the host culture that focuses on one of the following (instead of all): social, cultural, educational and service activities.

Provides opportunities to:

  • Experience a cultural exchange
  • Adjust behavior, views and perceptions (intellectually, emotionally, socially, politically, etc.).
  • Collaborate with people whose culture/customs, ethnicity, attitudes, opinions, and ideas that are different from your own.
  • Speak the local language and other ways to adapt communication.
  • Acquire/gain specific skills, knowledge or abilities.
Intercultural Experiences

CIESUniversity approved sustained intercultural experiences in the U.S. (minimum 75 hours total, maximum 2 experiences) include:

We can assist in finding these experiences on campus in our limited number of placements each semester. Sign up early for the best options and expect to wait a semester or 2 for a placement.

Additional experiences may also be eligible, but do need to be approved in advance of participation by the Program Director, Global Pathways Certificate and Exchanges.

Criteria for Domestic Intercultural Experiences:

Immersion in a target culture, as characterized by

  • Strategic and ongoing integration with another culture that focuses on one of the following: social, cultural, educational and service activities.
  • At least 35 hours over no more than 4 months

Provides opportunities to:

  • Experience a cultural exchange
  • Adjust behavior, views and perceptions (intellectually, emotionally, socially, politically, etc.).
  • Collaborate with people whose culture/customs, ethnicity, attitudes, opinions, and ideas that are different from your own.
  • Speak another language and other ways to adapt communication.
  • Acquire/gain specific skills, knowledge or abilities.
